If you are arriving at Incheon Airport with a large suitcase — especially a 24- to 30-inch case, two bags, children, or older family members — the airport limousine bus is often easier than taking AREX and transferring to the Seoul subway.
The train may look faster on a timetable. But that number only measures time on the train.
It does not measure dragging a suitcase through the airport station, finding an elevator, transferring at Seoul Station, navigating another subway station, finding the correct exit, and finally walking to your hotel.
With heavy luggage, the best route is often the one that minimizes how many times you have to move your suitcase — not the one with the shortest scheduled travel time.
There are exceptions. If you are staying near Hongik University Station, for example, the AREX All-Stop Train is directly connected to Hongdae and may be the better option.

Why Heavy Luggage Changes the Best Route
A transportation option that looks fastest on paper may not be fastest door to door when you are carrying heavy luggage.

That difference matters after a long international flight.
The scheduled journey may be 10 or 20 minutes longer by road, but the bus can eliminate an entire chain of luggage-handling tasks.
This is why comparing only "AREX takes X minutes" against "the bus takes Y minutes" can be misleading.
Airport Bus vs AREX: The Real Comparison
As of August 2026, the AREX Express Train costs KRW 13,000 for an adult and takes 43 minutes between Incheon Airport Terminal 1 and Seoul Station, or 51 minutes from Terminal 2. The regular undiscounted Express Train fares are listed at KRW 18,100 from T1 and KRW 18,700 from T2, while AREX currently sells the adult ticket at KRW 13,000.
The AREX All-Stop Train takes approximately 59 minutes from T1 to Seoul Station and 66 minutes from T2, with some services taking several minutes longer. Current adult transportation-card fares are KRW 4,750 from T1 to Seoul Station and KRW 5,350 from T2.
Typical airport limousine fares into central Seoul are currently KRW 17,000 on Airport Limousine routes and KRW 18,000 on K Airport Limousine routes.

The key difference is not speed. It is friction.
The Hidden Problem with Taking the Subway with a Suitcase
Seoul's subway system is excellent, but excellent public transportation is not the same thing as effortless transportation with a 28-inch suitcase.
AREX stations have elevators and escalators. AREX even publishes specific boarding positions closest to elevators for passengers with reduced mobility. At Seoul Station, the Airport Railroad platform itself is deep underground, and AREX identifies elevator-adjacent carriage positions specifically to make vertical movement easier.
That does not mean taking a suitcase on AREX or the subway is a bad idea.
It means you should account for station movement.
The difficult part is often what happens after the airport train.
Imagine your hotel is in Myeongdong.
The AREX Express takes you efficiently to Seoul Station. But your journey is not finished. You still need to reach your hotel.
Depending on its exact location, that may mean:
transferring to Seoul Metro Line 4,
navigating Seoul Station with luggage,
waiting for an elevator rather than taking the most direct stairs,
riding another train,
finding the correct Myeongdong exit,
and walking several hundred meters above ground.
In rain, summer heat, winter cold, or rush-hour crowds, those extra movements become more important.
A train can win the race to Seoul Station while losing the race to your hotel door.
Why the Airport Bus Works Better with Large Luggage
The strongest argument for the airport bus is simple: your suitcase stops being your problem for most of the journey.
Airport Limousine's current baggage rules allow each passenger to check up to two pieces under 28 inches and 20 kg each, or one larger piece under the applicable rules, with excess luggage subject to an additional charge. The operator's terms also describe a free allowance of up to two bags per ticket within its weight and dimensional limits.
The suitcase goes into the lower luggage compartment.
You take your seat.
You do not need to hold a 28-inch suitcase between your knees or position it inside a crowded commuter train.
This is particularly useful for:
families with children,
travelers with two suitcases,
older travelers,
couples carrying several bags,
travelers arriving after a long-haul flight,
and anyone staying near a limousine bus stop.
There is another advantage that is easy to overlook.
Many airport limousine routes are designed around major hotels and visitor districts, not simply train stations.

That changes the calculation.
The question becomes:
How far is the bus stop from my hotel?
rather than:
Which vehicle reaches central Seoul fastest?
Example: Incheon Airport to Myeongdong with a Large Suitcase
If your hotel is near a Myeongdong airport-limousine stop, I would usually choose the bus over AREX when carrying a large suitcase.
There are multiple airport bus options serving the broader Myeongdong area.
Airport Limousine route 6015 serves Myeongdong and nearby central-Seoul stops including Namdaemun Market, Lotte Hotel/Ibis Myeongdong, Royal Hotel, Euljiro, Hotel Kukdo, PJ Hotel and Myeongdong Station. The current adult fare is KRW 17,000.
K Airport Limousine 6701 costs KRW 18,000 and serves Lotte Hotel Seoul, Westin Josun, Myeongdong and other City Hall/Gwanghwamun-area hotels. Its current schedule lists downtown-bound service from 05:35 to 22:25 at T1 and 05:15 to 22:05 at T2, with roughly 25–35 minute intervals.
Compare the luggage experience.

If your hotel is 100–300 meters from the limousine stop, the bus advantage can be substantial.
If your hotel is several blocks away from the bus route but directly beside a subway exit, the difference becomes smaller.
Check your hotel against the actual bus stop before deciding.
Example: Incheon Airport to Hongdae — This Is Where AREX Can Win
Hongdae is the clearest example of why you should not blindly follow the "take the bus with luggage" rule.
The AREX All-Stop Train stops directly at Hongik University Station.
As of August 2026, the adult transportation-card fare is:

T2 → Hongik University: KRW 5,250
That is far cheaper than an airport limousine.
And unlike Myeongdong, you do not need to travel all the way to Seoul Station and then change lines.

then AREX is extremely competitive even with a suitcase.
Hongik University Station is deep underground — AREX lists the Airport Railroad platform at B4 and provides recommended train-door positions near elevators — so there is still vertical movement involved.
But if your accommodation is close to the correct exit, the direct train often makes more sense.
For Hongdae, check walking distance first. Do not automatically choose the bus.
Example: Incheon Airport to Gangnam
Gangnam is where the airport bus becomes much more attractive again, especially if your hotel is close to a 6703 stop.
K Airport Limousine route 6703 currently costs KRW 18,000 for adults and operates between Incheon Airport and the Gangnam/COEX area. The route serves Sinnonhyeon, Novotel Ambassador Gangnam, Eonju, Seonjeongneung, COEX, Grand InterContinental Seoul Parnas, Seolleung and several other Gangnam locations.
Current published frequency is approximately 50–65 minutes.
Downtown-bound service currently runs:

With AREX, reaching Gangnam normally means getting to central Seoul and then continuing by subway or another mode.
That extra transfer matters with luggage.
If the 6703 drops you directly at or close to your hotel, paying KRW 18,000 can be a very reasonable trade for eliminating that transfer.
The major disadvantage is traffic.
Gangnam road traffic can make bus journey times unpredictable, particularly during peak periods.
If you have an appointment at a fixed time, the railway's predictable running time may matter more than convenience.
What About a Taxi?
For two or three travelers carrying several suitcases, a taxi deserves serious consideration.
A taxi is obviously more expensive than a KRW 17,000–18,000 bus ticket for one traveler.
The calculation changes with multiple people.
Seoul's official visitor information currently estimates a standard taxi between Incheon Airport and Myeongdong at roughly KRW 47,000–52,000, with an additional expressway toll of KRW 7,900 indicated separately. The same official guide estimates approximately KRW 53,000–58,500 to the Grand InterContinental Seoul Parnas in the Gangnam/COEX area, again before the listed expressway toll.
For three people, three KRW 18,000 limousine tickets cost:
KRW 54,000
At that point, a taxi may be close enough in total cost to justify comparing.
And a taxi offers:

Capacity is the issue.
Three passengers plus several 28- or 30-inch suitcases may not fit comfortably into a standard sedan. In that situation, you may need a larger vehicle.
Official international taxis also offer fixed-zone pricing from Incheon Airport to Seoul. Current official Seoul rates range from KRW 70,000 to KRW 95,000 for a sedan depending on the district, with larger vehicles costing more. Jung-gu, where Myeongdong is located, falls in the KRW 85,000 international-taxi zone, while Gangnam-gu is KRW 90,000.
Regular taxis also have late-night surcharges. Incheon Airport currently lists Seoul taxi surcharges of 20% between 22:00–23:00, 40% between 23:00–02:00, and 20% between 02:00–04:00.
So the taxi decision is usually:

Buying Airport Bus Tickets at Incheon Airport
Airport limousine tickets from Incheon Airport are normally purchased before boarding.

Do not assume that missing the regular limousine bus means a taxi is your only option.
Incheon Airport currently has several overnight airport-bus services.
K Airport Limousine's N6701 serves Mapo, Seoul Station, Euljiro and Dongdaemun. Current airport-to-Seoul service operates as late as 04:40 from T1 and 04:20 from T2.
The N6703 serves the Gangnam side, including COEX, Jamsil and other eastern Seoul locations. Current downtown-bound service runs until 04:50 from T1 and 04:30 from T2.
Incheon Airport also lists additional N6000 and N6002 overnight routes.
Night services are less frequent than daytime buses, so check the exact departure before relying on one.
When You Should NOT Take the Airport Bus
The airport bus is not automatically the best choice.
Your hotel is next to Hongik University Station
Take a serious look at the AREX All-Stop Train.
You get a direct rail connection and a very low fare.
Your hotel is far from the nearest bus stop
A "direct" airport bus is not really direct if you still need to drag your luggage for 15 minutes after getting off.
Road traffic is heavy
Airport buses are exposed to traffic.
AREX is much more predictable.
You are traveling light
With a backpack or small carry-on, subway transfers become much less annoying.
The cheaper All-Stop Train becomes difficult to beat.
You are staying next to Seoul Station
The AREX Express is almost purpose-built for this journey.
Forty-three minutes from T1 and 51 minutes from T2 to Seoul Station is hard to argue with.

Compare a taxi.
The total bus fare may already be approaching the price of a standard cab to some parts of central Seoul.

If your suitcase is heavy, do not optimize only for train minutes. Optimize for luggage movements.
AREX is fast, reliable and inexpensive — and for Hongdae or Seoul Station it can clearly be the better option.
But if reaching your hotel requires:
AREX → station walk → subway transfer → another station → exit → street walk
while an airport bus stops near the hotel, the bus often provides the more practical journey.
After a long flight, moving a 28-inch suitcase five fewer times can be worth much more than arriving at Seoul Station 15 minutes earlier.
The best airport transportation with luggage is not necessarily the fastest vehicle. It is the route with the least friction between the airport and your hotel.
